Thursday 29 August 1957 9.15-10.15pm ITV – ITV Television Playhouse: Eugene O’Neill’s ‘Anna Christie’

In Anna Christie Renée plays Marthy Owen: companion of Anna’s father, known for her lusty attitude and belief that nothing in life is permanent. She’s usually parked on a bar room stool! Diane Cilento, then expecting her first baby, is Anna (assuming a hard American mid-west accent). It’s Diane’s first dramatic role on British TV, although she’s been on several Goon Shows with Peter Sellers. Eugene O’ Neill, who died in 1953, was one of the first writers to portray a man of brawn without background – one deeply aware of the spiritual side of life – even if he hasn’t the words to express himself. The stoker Mat Burke falls in love with Anna. This role falls to Sean Connery – a 26 year old who’s just landed a 7-year contract with 20th Century Fox.

“You’re me, forty years later,” Anna says to Marthy.

Thursday 16 February 1957 11.15-11.45pm ITV – Errol Flynn Theatre: Brock Williams’ ‘Take the High Road’

Take the High Road offers Renée a story set in her native Scotland. Here too, is a lead role for American actress June Havoc – once part of a legendary kiddy act. This year – 1957 – sees publication of a book by June’s sister – soon to be part of America’s permanent show-business tapestry when it’s adapted by composer Jules Styne, lyricist Stephen Sondheim and director Jerome Robbins into the stage musical Gypsy.

Baby June and sister Rose Louise had been forced into American Vaudeville at an early age, driven by the aspirations of their mother, Ellen Evangeline. In ‘Just Kids’ they’d been a class act, playing many a West Coast theatre, before Louise emerged as Gypsy Rose Lee – legendary stripper. Renée Houston had already met Gypsy during a wartime concert.

Between takes for Take the High Road, Renée and June share a Sister Act tale or two.
